Documentary Film Screenin: Liga Terezin

August 24, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

This program is free to attend, but registration is required.

Join us for a screening of the documentary film, Liga Terezin [The Theresienstadt Team] followed by a discussion with Oded Breda and Joanie Holzer Schirm, descendants of survivors from the Nazi ghetto and concentration camp Theresienstadt.

A documentary film that tells the incredible story of the soccer league, which took place in the ghetto of Theresienstadt, 40 miles Northwest of Prague. From 1942 to 1944, Jewish prisoners were allowed to play soccer matches on improvised fields set up in the courtyards of the Barracks where they lived. Thousands of spectators watched a mixture of professional and amateur players and briefly escaped the reality of their terrible plight: hunger, sickness, and death. All the while, they lived in a shroud of fear cast by the terror of the transports that the Nazi government sent to the ‘East’ toward certain death. Yet, this film not only looks at the past, it also explores the present, asking how and why antisemitism lives on. Liga Terezin asks all of us to consider one important question: What can soccer—the most popular sport in the world—do to help all of us combat hate?

This program is part of the Holocaust Center’s Discrimination in Sports Series.
